One of the university teams, SmartWorks, is developing inexpensive consumer micro-robots for some of the least pleasant home cleaning tasks.

At the DFJ Venture Challenge yesterday, the 15 winners of university business plan competitions convened for a state-wide finals event. They were all fascinating and creative, yet completely different from each other.

The two winners will each receive 0K of seed financing:
• Bionic Harvest from Cal Tech: Electrical energy harvesting from the motion of the human body to recharge the batteries in implantable medical devices.
• World of Good from UC Berkeley: ethically sourced fair trade artisan gifts sold in mainstream retailers.

Congrats to these wonderful entrepreneurs!

Black Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. This is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Stores typically open earlier in the morning so more people can take advantage of their deeply discounted sales.

Major retail chains such as Best Buy, CircuitCity, WalMart and ComUSA, typically hold back announcement of their Black Friday sales until the last day for competitive reasons. As such, when these web sites leak information on sale prices before retail stores officially release them, retailers become visibly affected. a while ago i was contacted by the harvard business review, asking if they could use one of my photos of cory doctorow for an article. now that it's about to hit the shelves, they kindly sent me two copies, plus two proofs. it only has my name as small credit in the margin, but still...i'm glad they liked the shot :)

Letter: Advanta Closing All Business Credit Cards

This is the letter received today from Advanta announcing the closing of all business credit cards at the end of the Month. According to the Consumer Affairs blog, Advanta was having horrible losses.

You can actually read the letter text in the LARGE size photo.

The main problem of course is all the bills that are set to auto pay. I don't have another business credit card to pay them. Therefore, I am forced to intermingle business and personal expenses which is a VERY BAD thing from a liability perspective since is it a method used to pierce the corporate veil. I'll have to see if bills can be paid via check until we can sort this out.

And what is up with the auto white balance? That letter is supposed to be white! Proof once again why you should always shoot in raw. :)
