Taboo, or not?
Tattoos have had different significance in different societies, respected and deemed as the highest honor in some, but often viewed negatively in ours. Tattooing has been around for thousands of years, and is one of the oldest forms of art, laden with as many unusual meanings as there are global cultures. These indelible marks denote maturity, status, belonging, or surely the oldest – adding to the beauty of the wearer.
How then, do we see tattoos locally? Even as the global community continues to grow in size and social acceptance, it might still be inviolable in the local context. We seek, thus, to carefully examine this age-old taboo.
Do people really understand tattoos then? What are the trends, the culture and the ethos of this ancient art that people understand locally?

Funnel Alley Business Man

A fairly narrow and short stone street in the old downtown part of La Candelaria full of bars, cafés, bakeries and quirky shops - Callejon del Embudo (Funnel Alley).

One of the many statues one can find within the El Candelarioa neighborhood of Bogota. This one is a man with a brief case (most likely a business man).

According to Mike of Bogota's Bike Tour, the subjects are all locals of La Candelaria who posed for the artist.

Failing Up in Business

Barry Moltz, Author, Bounce!
Moderator Cassie Phillips

Mistakes can serve as learning tools, and sometimes enhance your career.

Conventional wisdom teaches us that the road to business success is a straight one - if you work hard you'll win big, and if failure finds you at least there will be lessons to be learned. Not so, says entrepreneurship expert Barry Moltz, who regularly serves up unorthodox views on dealing with failure and defining success. In Bounce!, Moltz teaches that sometimes failure simply stinks. But if we recognize failure as a fixture of the business cycle and an opportunity for choice and change, we can build the business confidence needed to go the distance in a challenging economy. Failing certainly isn't fun, but with Moltz's tools you can bounce beyond, not just back.

The Lonely, Self-Pitying Melancholia of the Business Traveler at the End of the Day
business one
An airport anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world, for that matter: The terminal stretches away from you into infinity, the sun is plummeting below the horizon, and you feel empty and alone. You didn't sleep well in your overnight hotel room, you've been running on pure adrenaline since getting up this morning, many hours ago, with clients all day, trying to remain focused on the slightest nuance that might give you an edge. The meeting went well, more or less, and now you're crashing. You're miles and many hours from home, still have to catch another, uncertain connecting flight after this one and drive home from the airport before you see your loved ones. The scene on the tarmac looks as lonely as you feel. You stop staring at the sunset and give yourself a little shake, to get rid of your self-pitying rut. You know that lots of people would love to have your job, or to have stayed at the elegant little boutique hotel where you spent your sleepless night. Pull yourself together. Have a cup of coffee, boot up the laptop and send some emails. Better yet -- give the laptop a rest, and take some pictures.

Business Cards for SXSW

I was thinking about getting new cards, even though I still have a few of the previous ones, and thought it would be fun to take the images from the Flickr Greeting videos I did recently.

The face helps you remember me, and the greeting is there as if I am always saying Hi whenever you look at it.

Which you will. You'll frame it. And put it on your wall. And look at it every day.

The cards are printed on 100% recycled paper and can be recycled but are also 100% biodegradable. Thanks moo.com!

Ordered on Friday from overnightprints.com, arrived yesterday. Pretty well done, even if the little elf girl ended up a bit faint (lower left on the red side). I guess I'm not such a bad graphic designer (er, graphic reappropriator, I guess, since I simply mixed and matched other images). Yes, that's a voidwalker from WoW playing a Guitar Hero guitar.

By the way, the "Gamers as Designers Project" is what it says under my name -- my dissertation topic has a name!

Anyway, not too bad. Sorry for the blurry iPhone photo, I'll upload a better one sometime later.

We mean business believe me

A few nice business one images I found:

We mean business believe me
business one
Image by National Library of Scotland
Uniformed men inside a 'tepee-style' tent. Only their heads are showing, and they are all looking directly at the camera. This shot has obviously been set up and is intentionally fun and light-hearted. The tent has been pitched in a grassy field and appears to be faraway from the mud and chaos of the Front.

This photograph and caption are excellent examples of the kind of material the Government and Military often used a propaganda. Such images helped to raise the spirits of those at home, whilst shielding them from the horrific reality of war.

[Original reads: 'BRITISH OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE WESTERN FRONT. "We mean business believe me!" The first party of American Engineers to arrive on the British Front. They are now doing invaluable work constructing and running railways up to the front.']

I was trying to photograph Petunia, but she kept attacking the camera (seriously!), so most shots didn't turn out. I got a few like this though, as well as some blurry ones of her on the lens itself. Ultimately I guess I got some good shots, though not much variety, cause she really wouldn't stop. She's a somewhat aggressive spider. An Asian birdeater from the Haplopelma genus.

"One Need Never Leave" - New York

Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums, and universities. It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations. It is the center of New York City and the New York metropolitan region, hosting the seat of city government and a large portion of the area's employment, business, and entertainment activities. As a result, residents of New York City's other boroughs such as Brooklyn and Queens often refer to a trip to Manhattan as "going to the city", despite the comparable populations between those boroughs.

Walking along one side of the Thames after visiting some museums brought us to this business district. There was a misty rain for most of the day, so it set down a nice sheen of reflection. There's a tiny water canal that runs through the center here, and the line leads right to the Tower Bridge, which you can see in the distance.
