Mark Prisk, Business Minister

Captains of industry from world leading UK companies are backing a new Government campaign to highlight the best of modern British manufacturing at an exhibition during the Olympic Games.

Business Secretary Vince Cable and Business Minister Mark Prisk have today formally launched the Make it in Great Britain campaign, which aims to transform outdated views of UK manufacturing and dispel the myth that Britain ‘doesn’t make anything anymore’.

Senior traders such as Joe Greenwell from Ford of Britain, William Butler-Adams from Brompton Bicycles and Michael Ryan from Bombardier Aerospace are behind the campaign. They will act as the first ‘industry champions’ taking formal roles as part of the campaign and supporting its work.

The exhibition will take place at the Science Museum and will run from 24 July to 9 September 2012. The campaign builds on the already successful See Inside Manufacturing initiative and will celebrate the successes of the manufacturing sector and encourage young people to consider a career in the industry. There will also be a specific element, the Make it in Great Britain Challenge, focusing on new innovations yet to be brought to the market.

Opened in 1908, this is Racine's oldest florist. Robert and Ethel Miller opened as Racine Floral Company and changed the name to Miller's Flowers in the 1930s when their son joined the business. It is still in the same family over a hundred years later.

Apprenticeships Boost for Business

Vince Cable has announced new measures to ensure more young people benefit from an apprenticeship, and to help employers gain the skilled workers they need to grow.

As part of the Government’s plan for growth, Ministers are taking action to make it easier for companies to take on apprentices, and ensure that the quality of apprenticeships is continually improved.

Vince Cable was speaking alongside Skills Minister John Hayes at a summit for business leaders in London, stating that the government would slash the red tape that can deter hard pressed firms from recruiting apprentices, and provide a financial incentive of up to £1,500 to help the smallest firms recruit their first young apprentices.

I'm still trying to find information on this building. So far, I found a November 2004 obituary for a Henry F. Marx that mentioned the "family retail clothing business, Henry Marx Company" that his grandfather started in 1895 (source).

Business Cards

I've been going through some personal stuff. I came across these 2 old business cards of mine from 20 years or so ago.

Alexander & Alexander is still in business under this name but no longer has an office in Portland.

Transit Casualty Company was one of the largest insurance failures in the USA (before AIG) and it took them 20 years to clean up the mess that was left. I helped, with the clean-up that is.

I'm currently modelling Ticketcorner's business model. Ticketcorner is based in Switzerland and is the second largest ticketing company in Europe.

However, modelling with paper and post-it has its limitations and I am looking forward to new modelling tools, such as "fantasized" about in my blogpost on business model innovation...
