Atlanta - Sweet Auburn: Atlanta Life Insurance Company Building Annex
business insurance
This neoclassical annex to the Atlanta Life Insurance Company Building, at 142 Auburn Avenue, was built in 1936. The Atlanta Life Insurance Company Building, located at 148 Auburn Avenue, was originally constructed as a residence and served as the headquarters of the Atlanta Life Insurance Company, founded by Alonzo Herndon, from 1920 through 1980. Atlanta Life Insurance Co. moved to the adjacent, Herndon Plaza, in 1980.

The Sweet Auburn Historic District is a historic African-American neighborhood, running Auburn Avenue, formerly known as Wheat Street. The name Sweet Auburn was coined by John Wesley Dobbs, who called it the "richest Negro street in the world." Its rise as the preeminent black district in Atlanta stemmed from the 1906 Atlanta Race Riot, after which many black businesses started to relocate from previously integrated downtown district.

Fallen from Grace: Travelers Insurance
insurance business
We’ve been their loyal customers for 11+ years, we’ve never even bothered checking for better rates anywhere else, but they've fallen from grace. I not longer will recommend them and will tell everyone (including all my blog readers, Flickr friends, and Twitter friends how much I dislike them). We're looking for a new company for auto, home, business, etc.

Do you love your insurance company? Do you have any horror stories and companies to avoid? Chime in over on my blog. I'd love to hear about it so I can choose a great company to give my money to.

Memphis Historical Markers: The Universal Life Insurance Building
business insurance
"Founded in 1923 by Dr. J.E. Walker, with co-founders A.W. Willis, Sr. and M.W. Bonner, this family business grew to be the fourth largest African-American-owned life insurance company in the United States. Dr. Walker's son, A. Maceo Walker, continued the business from 1952 until 1983. He was succeeded by his daughter, Patricia Walker Shaw, who ran it until her death in 1985. Descendants of all three families made significant contributions to the company's growth.

Designed by the African-American architectural firm McKissack and McKissack and constructed in 1949, this building houses the national headquarters of the Universal Life Insurance Company. The Egyptian-Revival style building is an ongoing example of the interest that African-Americans developed in the 1920s in Egyptian art. During the era of racial segregation, it was one of the few places where Blacks could gather for their civic and social affairs."
